Grief-Informed Care:
Supporting families
without trying to fix them.

A warm, practical session that gives your team a shared language for grief, and the confidence to stay present in tender moments — instead of freezing, over-reassuring, or accidentally shutting families down.

Why this talk

Most staff aren't undertrained. They're under-supported.

Your team already cares deeply. They show up at bedsides, answer phones at odd hours, and sit with families in some of the hardest moments of a life. What they often don't have is a shared framework for what to say, what to not say, and what to do when there's nothing to fix.

This talk fills that gap — plainly, without clinical jargon and without making anyone feel they've been doing it wrong. It leaves your team more confident, and your families better held.

What your team will leave with

Four things your staff can use on Monday morning.

  • 01

    A working definition of grief

Beyond the five stages — including anticipatory grief, disenfranchised grief, and why grief doesn't move in a straight line.

  • 02

Phrases to keep, phrases to retire

A short, memorable set of things to say (and gently stop saying) when a family is in front of you.

  • 03

    The "don't fix, hold" frame

A simple, teachable model for staying present when there is nothing to solve — and why that is often the highest form of care.

  • 04

    Self-check for the caregiver

How to tell when you're the one who's overwhelmed, and small resets your team can use between shifts, calls, and visits.

Session outline

What a typical 60-minute session looks like.

Every talk is tailored to the room, but here's the shape I'd usually propose for a mixed care-team audience. Timings shift for a keynote or a half-day training.

  1. 0:00–0:08

    Warm open & grounding

A short story, a shared exhale, and a working definition of what we mean by "grief-informed."

  2. 0:08–0:22

What grief actually looks like at work

Anticipatory grief, ambiguous loss, disenfranchised grief, and the small signals we often miss in residents, families, and each other.

  3. 0:22–0:38

    Language & presence

Phrases to keep and retire. The "don't fix, hold" frame — with two short role-plays your team can borrow from directly.

  4. 0:38–0:50

    Caring for the caregiver

Signs of cumulative grief in staff, and tiny between-shifts practices that actually work in a busy environment.

  5. 0:50–1:00

    Q&A and a soft close

Real questions from your team, and a takeaway handout they can keep at their desk or in the med room.

Ideal audiences

Especially good for teams that carry a lot, quietly.

Senior-living communities

Assisted living, memory care, independent living — for line staff, med techs, life-enrichment teams, and leadership.

Hospice & home care

Nursing, aide, social work, chaplaincy, and bereavement teams looking for a shared vocabulary across disciplines.

Healthcare & front-line staff

Clinics, oncology teams, funeral service, and any front-line role that regularly meets families in the middle of a loss.

“Grief doesn't need a fix. It needs a witness. This session gives your team the language, the confidence, and the small rituals to be that witness — without burning themselves out in the process.”

FAQ

A few things owners and administrators usually ask.

Is this therapy?

No. This is coaching and education. I don't diagnose or treat, and I coordinate respectfully alongside clinical care, chaplaincy, and social work. Nothing in this talk asks your staff to take on clinical roles.

Will this feel too heavy for a staff meeting?

It's honest, but it's not heavy for its own sake. There's warmth, some lightness, and always a soft close so people leave settled — not shaken.

Can you tailor it to our audience?

Yes — every talk is tailored. Before we lock a date, we'll have a short call so I understand your team, your setting, and any recent losses in your community that I should be sensitive to.

Do you travel outside Boise?

Yes. In person around Boise, Nampa, and the Treasure Valley at no travel cost. Farther-out engagements are welcome — travel is quoted at cost.

What about fees?

Fees vary by format, audience size, and travel. Use the form below and I'll come back with a clear quote within one business day.
